The blank page is often the hardest part. You know who the song is for, but "tell us your story" can feel like a big question. Start with a few ordinary sentences.
Answer three small questions
- Who is this person to you?
- What moment or detail makes your relationship yours?
- What do you want them to feel when they hear the song?
You can answer in notes. Clear, concrete details matter more than polished writing.
A short example
This is for my sister Anna. We used to sing in the kitchen while making pancakes on Sundays. She moved away last year, and I miss those mornings. I want the song to feel warm and a little playful, and to tell her she always has a place here.
This gives the song a person, a scene, a feeling, and a message. There is no need to invent a dramatic story when a real memory already means something.
Say what matters most
If a name, phrase, or memory is essential, make that clear. If something is sensitive or you would rather leave it out, do not include it in the story.
A long list can make it harder to tell what matters. Pick the details you would be disappointed not to hear, and let the rest provide context.
