How to make a birthday song feel personal

A birthday song does not need to tell someone's entire life story. A few details that only you would think to mention can say much more than a long list of compliments.

Start with one real memory

Think of a moment you still talk about. A road trip with a wrong turn. The dinner that went hilariously wrong. A quiet morning when they knew exactly what you needed.

Write it as you would tell a friend. You do not need to rhyme or make it sound like a lyric.

Pick details they will recognize

Three or four details give a song something to work with:

• The name or nickname you actually use.
• A shared place, habit, or inside joke.
• Something they do that makes life better.
• What you want to wish them for the year ahead.

Instead of "you are always there for me," try "you answer my calls even when I only need to complain about Monday." The second version sounds like a particular person.
